“Contact, capture confirmed,” Nasa mission control in Houston said as Atlantis and its crew of US four astronauts latched on to the orbiting research outpost.
Ahead of approach, the spacecraft performed its habitual slow somersault, also known as the rendezvous pitch manoeuvre.
The one-degree-per-second backflip allows ISS crew members already at the station to take photos of its heat shield and check if any damage was incurred during take-off.
The approach and latch-on were “flawless”, said mission control.
