Children in the coastal district of Ashkelon were invited Wednesday night to begin a new project: to participate in writing a Torah scroll for their area.
The project, sponsored by the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, will involve children ages three months to 18 years old.
“It is considered a great deed, to write a Torah scroll in the merit of children,” said Rabbi Yitzchak Barda, former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Ramat Gan.
Each child will have one letter in the Torah scroll written on his or her name, and will receive a certificate of documentation.
As part of the project, students will learn about the process of writing in a Torah scroll, and about the profession of being a scribe. They will also be taught how to prepare the special parchment used in the Torah.
