The Ten Plagues of Egypt

It is part of Jewish tradition to tell the story of the Ten Plagues of Egypt during Passover Seder. The Ten Plagues of Egypt (Eser Ha-Makot) refer to the ten calamities (blood, frogs, lice, wild animals, pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness and the killing of the firstborn) imposed upon Egypt by God as told in the Book of Exodus to show to the Egyptians his power and to convince the Pharaoh to release the Israelite slaves.

  • Observe the Seder during the first night of Passover. The Passover Seder has 15 parts in which the plagues are explained in the magid (the telling).
  • Say the 10 plagues during the Magid. Explain first the four verses in Deuteronomy 26:5-8. This scripture describes the freedom of the ancient Jews from slavery in Israel.
  • As you tell the story of the Ten Plagues, discard a drop of wine from your Kiddush cup to symbolize the suffering of the Israelites.
  • End this part of Seder with songs of praise.
